A little more than 11 years ago, Noam Gershony woke up in a Haifa hospital, practically every bone in his body broken and with no memory of what happened on his last successful mission as an Apache helicopter pilot in the Israeli Defence Forces.

Six years later, Gershony became the first Israeli to win gold in wheelchair tennis in the 2012 London Paralympic Games, a sport he started playing for fun after he made it through six months in hospital and 18 months of rehabilitation.

“I was in tears … I felt a combination of emotions… seeing the Israeli flag and hearing the Hatikvah (Israeli national anthem) was overwhelming,” the 35-year-old hero said to a speechless, awestruck crowd of about 150 recently in Toronto.
