When my wife Denise and I arrived in Jerusalem the afternoon before my half-marathon of a lifetime, all I worried about were the hills I’d have to face the next morning.

After all, even though I’d trained in Toronto for four months for my “bucket list” run in -20C temperatures, icy winds and snowy conditions and felt really fit, I’d never run on such a hilly course — one I later found out was among the top five most challenging in the world.

What I didn’t even think about was I was running with 30,000 others in Jerusalem — a city which, sadly, is ground zero for terrorism. In fact, according to reports, terrorist attacks tripled in December of 2017 after U.S. President Donald Trump’s recognition of Jerusalem as Israel’s capital.
