We mourn the loss of Saul Feldberg z”l, beloved husband of Toby for over 65 years, much-loved father of David and Elyssa, Bernie, Janice and Jeff, and Joel and Melissa. Devoted grandfather of Alexa and Dustin, Jordy and Daniel, Jake, Ashley, Sydney, Dylan, Reese, Jay, Eden, and Lucy. Loving great-grandfather of Ivy, Elliot, Jack, Asher, Lev, and Tommy.
Born in 1935 in Skarzysko, Poland, Saul experienced great loss during the Holocaust. Following this tragic of beginnings, he started a new life on arriving in Toronto via Israel. He met and married Toby Elsner and started a family while involving themselves in Toronto’s Jewish community. Soon after, Saul launched his office furniture manufacturing business. After a slow start but with his great determination, Saul grew Global Upholstery Co. into the international venture it is today.
When Toby assumed the position of National President of Beit Halochem Canada, Aid to Disabled Veterans of Israel 25 years ago, Saul was behind her all the way. His pride in Toby’s important work on behalf of Israel’s disabled veterans was evident for all to see and he enjoyed travelling with her to meet the men and women injured while protecting his beloved Israel.
Despite his wide-ranging successes in business and a remarkable number of accolades, including his investiture as a Member of the Order of Canada (2018), Saul was a humble man whose quiet philanthropy supported scores of charitable organizations throughout Canada and Israel, including many of Toronto’s health, education, social, and religious institutions.
Before anything else, Saul was a family man. Toby, his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren were his world. They will miss him. We will miss him.
May the memory of Saul Feldberg z”l forever be a blessing.
